Competitiveness in organizations : the msmes in the manufacturing sector Corozal , Sucre - Colombia

Abstract

In Latin America, small and medium enterprises - Pymes occupy a privileged position within the business community; they account for about 99,0% of all enterprises in the region and generate employment to more than 60,0% of all workers (OCDE/CEPAL, 2012). According Llisterri, et al, (2002), the competencies of Pymes to assimilate knowledge and technology to produce, cooperate and compete in markets are crucial to generate competitiveness in nations; however, the reality is very different, especially in regions like Latin America, where the contribution of these businesses to Gross Domestic Product - GDP is relatively low, which reveals deficiencies in productivity levels (OCDE/CEPAL, 2012). The aim of this study is to evaluate some aspects of the competitiveness of manufacturing companies in the city of Sincelejo; for this, information was investigated over a hundred Mipymes. Although most employers surveyed (94,0%) felt that their company is competitive, they have disadvantageous conditions in various organizational areas, which make them have low levels of competitiveness. According to the empirical results there is a positive correlation between operating income and size of firms, thus small business seems to be at a disadvantage in relation to big business
